'Black Gold' to Open Doha Tribeca Film Festival

A spectacular opening night is expected at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTTF) with the world premiere of the movie ‘Black Gold’ starring Antonio Banderas and co-produced by the Doha Film Institute.

“The theme is universal and the story is beautifully told. It will be a spectacular opening night,” said Amanda Palmer, Executive Director of DFI, adding the cast including Banderas and Freida Pinto and director Jean-Jacques Annaud are coming at the festival.

The international media was treated to a sneak preview of the 128-minute Jean-Jacques Annaud movie during DTFF 2011 press launch yesterday at the DFI headquarters in Katara.

One of the largest cinematic projects ever undertaken in the Arab world, $55m film is an adaptation of Hans Ruesch’s classic novel of the same title and was shot in Tunisia and Qatar.

Over 200 talents were involved when the film was shot in Qatar including Qatari actor Mohammed Ali Ibrahim who is doing a cameo in the film and Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi who performed two songs in the film.

A special panel which includes the cast and director of the film will be held a day following the premiere in which a one-hour documentary will also be shown encapsulating the making of the film in Tunisia shortly before the start of turbulent times and during film shoot in Qatar.

Set for international release next month, the film, according to Palmer, has not only opened opportunities for local talents’ exposure to international audience but also a precursor for other possible international productions in Qatar.

Black Gold tells a sweeping historical epic set against the dramatic backdrop of the Arabian Peninsula in the 1930s. It is the tale of two rival emirs, the oil that came between them and the young dynamic leader that who rose to unite the desert tribes.

Ticket price for the screening is QR50 and is available at DFI lounges at the Villaggio and City Center malls and DFI Festival Office, Building 26 Katara or at the www.dohafilminstitute.com/filmfestival.
